  1. Where do the addresses come from for sending the questionnaire?

The addresses are randomly selected based on the so called “Ausländerdatei A”, a file which contains all registered foreigners that live in a certain jurisdiction and which is used by every Foreigners‘ Registration Office in Germany. This data may be used for scientific purpose with high public interest. Every German Foreigners´Registration Office draws a random sample and gives selected persons‘ adresses to the Ministry of the Interior and Sports Facilities, who send out our questionnaires. The Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony does not have any information about the adresses.

  1. Is it a reliable study of a reliable institute?

Postal surveys are a common way of collecting data  for scientific research. It allows the researchers to contact a high number of participants. The Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony has more than 20 years of experience in surveys and thus a great expertise. In 2014, it had its last representative study ofabout 6,000 residents of Lower Saxony.

  1. Is the participation obligatory?

There is no obligation to participate in the study or to answer all questions, but it is desirable for us that as many people as possible take part and answer all questions. Only if enough people participate, we will get adequate information about migration to Lower Saxony.

  1. Are all data kept completely anonymous and confidential?

No names are asked on the questionnaire itself. You are asked for your contact details on the a separate sheet. This is necessary, because we need your contact details for the second and third survey. Only the comparison between the three surveys will provide useful insights into why migrants stay in Lower Saxony or move back to their home country. The contact details will be sent to the research institute in a separate envelope and will be treated and stored separately from the questionnaires. The contact information will only be used to send out the questionnaires for the second and third survey. After the three surveys are completed, all contact details will be deleted and the data of the study will be completely anonymous.

  1. Why do I get five Euros?

We know that it takes time to completing the questionnaires. Therefore, we want to thank you with a small compensation. Every questionnaire encloses five Euros. No matter if you take part in the survey or not, you can keep the money. Participants who do not want to take the money can send it back together with the questionnaire. For the second and the third survey, you will get five Euros as well.

  1. Are there any costs for me?

Only the time you spend filling out the questionnaires. There will be no financial costs. The return of the questionnaires vie mail is already paid for by the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony.

  1. For what purpose are the results used?

The results will be published in form of a research report on this website. In addition all interested ministries will get this report. We use aggregated data. Consequently, no conclusions can be drawn regarding individual cases. In cooperation with the ministries we want to discuss the possible consequences of the results. Due to a high number of participants, the comprehensive questionnaire and the longitudinal design our study is suitable like no other to analyze the real situation of migrants in Lower Saxony. The results are an important basis for political decisions.

  1. If I change my place of residence, what should I do?

Because of our research aim it is really important to stay in contact with all participants, even if they changed their place of residence. In the case of movement we ask them to inform us about their new address.
